The lecture presented by Dr. Jivianne Lee was part of the 33rd Annual USC Periodontal & Implant Symposium held in Los Angeles in 2008. Dr. Lee graduated from the University of California Los Angeles David Geffen School of Medicine with MD degree. Currently, he is Clinical Instructor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Dr. Lee practices Otolaryngology and Plastic Surgery within the Head & Neck region.

The lecture presented by Dr. Robert Vanarsdall Jr. was part of the 33rd Annual USC Periodontal & Implant Symposium held in Los Angeles in 2008. Dr. Vanarsdall is Professor of Orthodontics and Chairman of the Department of Orthodontics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. He received his dental degree from the Medical College of Virginia and is board certified in both Orthodontics and Periodontics. Dr. Vanarsdall served as Chairman of the Department of Periodontics, Department of Pediatric Dentistry and has directed Orthodontics at Penn since 1981. He is on the staff at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Professor at the Medical College of Pennsylvania. He has also served as President of the Eastern Component of the E.H. Angle Society of Orthodontics. In addition to his teaching commitments, Dr. Vanarsdall has maintained a private practice for over 30 years.

The lecture presented by Dr. Stephen Wallace was part of the 33rd Annual USC Periodontal & Implant Symposium held in Los Angeles in 2008. Dr. Wallace is a graduate of Boston University School of Graduate Dentistry with a certificate in Periodontics. He is ociate Professor at the New York University Department of Implant Dentistry, a Diplomate of the International Congress of Oral Implantology and a Fellow of the Academy of Osseointegration. He lectures in the U.S.A and abroad on dental implantology and periodontics. He is the author of journal articles and textbook chapters on implantology and Co-Editor of sinus elevation textbook released in Italy. Dr. Wallace maintains a private practice limited to Periodontics in Waterbury, CT.

The lecture presented by Dr. David L. Cochran was part of the 33rd Annual USC Periodontal & Implant Symposium held in Los Angeles in 2008. Dr. Cochran is a graduate of the University of Virginia and received his D.D.S. and Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the Medical College of Virginia. He was also trained in Periodontology at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Cochran is currently Professor and Chairman of the Department of Periodontics at The University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and a fellow of the American College of Dentistry and the International College of Dentistry. Dr. Cochran has published numerous scientific articles and abstracts on periodontics, biochemistry and implant dentistry. He has received awards for his research work at both the national and international levels. Dr. Cochran is an active basic science and clinical researcher who has received funding from both the NIH-NIDR and private industry.

The lecture presented by Dr. Arvie Malik was part of the 33rd Annual USC Periodontal & Implant Symposium held in Los Angeles in 2008. Dr. Malik received her Bachelors of Science degree in Dental Hygiene from Texas Woman’s University. She has over 23 years of clinical experience in both periodontal and prosthodontic practices in Texas and Califorinia. Currently, she practices full-time in a private Prosthodontic practice in Newport Beach, California. Dr. Malik has been teaching part-time for over 15 years at West Los Angeles College in the Department of Dental Hygiene. She serves as a lecturer in the section of Periodontics at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She also instructs hygienists on the use of magnification and other technological advances and serves as a clinical instructor at the Newport Coast Oral Facial Institute (NCOFI). Formerly, she was a Clinical Educator Consultant for Dentsply Corporation.

The first part deals with the theory of the finite element method. containing the necessary mathematical theory but written so that readers from a dental background can easily understand. Next, dental implant applications, and the critical issues of using finite element analysis for dental implants are discussed, followed by aspects of dental implant modeling.
